Uganda Bound!

In preparation for my trip to Uganda I’ve done all the stuff in the packet: booked tickets, bought mosquito repellent  got my yellow fever vaccine, packed enough Clif bars to feed a small family for a week, etc… but I thought before I started this long anticipated journey, I’d reflect on my expectations and goals.

  • A better understanding of medicine: self-explanatory, I think. Away from the rich wood-paneling and flat screen TVs of NMH, I want to learn a different way of doing things.
  • Personal insight: less self-explanatory. I’m expecting this trip to change me, at the core, in some way, for the better. To teach me something about myself I never knew.
  • Avoid contracting an infectious disease: I’m actually not sure how achievable this goal is but here’s to hoping.
  • Impact someone’s life in a meaningful way.
  • Live out my childhood obsession with the Lion King and see some kind of African wildlife up close.
  • Avoid getting eaten/mauled by said wildlife mentioned above.
  • Experience Ugandan culture, food, dance, music, life.
  • NOT lose my camera or passport. In reference to Eurotrip 2009. Lesson learned…(?)
  • Update this blog regularly. I’m giving myself a goal of 3x/week.

Overall I hope this trip will help me to be a better physician as graduation slowly creeps up. See you all stateside in March!
